MoMA today, tired but delighted. Spent ages with the pieces by Alexander Calder, sending puffs of air through the gallery, watching the pieces sway and spin. Every extension is limited, bound by the other limbs and the total structure. They spin in one direction and are gently turned in another vector, another plane. Captivating.

Manhattan was a writhing, shoving mass of humanity. A flash mob would have been lost within the intersection at Radio City Musical Hall. Were we expecting it, walking between MoMA and Grand Central? Of course. But it didn't make it any easier.

Oh -- and how hard was it not to buy the best Joseph Cornell book at the bookstore? That place was great.

http://tagger.steve.museum/ - a social tagging project to label museum pieces from several collections. Addicting, because once you finish tagging an item, another art piece appears. Everything from japanese watercolor scenes to Picasso - and nothing I've ever seen in a book or gallery.

Truth: I've never had a Mallomar. Or really even been offered the chance. This will change.

Subject:John Vanderslice, Austin, Wilco.
Time:12:15 pm
Barsuk ladies: there's a new note for you in the John Vanderslice merch case.

And you guys. He didn't just get a new bass player. He got a violin-playin' bassist. The new arrangements were the best kind of mental puzzle, fitting together Ian (who I hadn't seen in over a year, many hearts), Dave (who, according to my mom, is the best drummer in indie rock, since Spoon isn't really indie anymore), and John with this new level of instrumentation. Very delicious.

Here in Austin, it's ACL weekend, so folks are very talkative, rumors flying left and right. I'm not going to the Festival, but I plan to camp out at the ACL studio and get tickets for the free Wilco taping. They usually film 5-6 new episodes over the festival weekend (Arcade Fire, Bloc Party), but Wilco is where my heart's set.

Wish me luck!

Subject:Mario cheated with Gwyneth!
Time:06:48 pm
From the yumsugar.com blog: "A few weeks ago we mentioned Mario Batali's new show with Gwyneth Paltrow. If you recall, the show of them road-tripping through the Spanish countryside will be aired on PBS, not Food Network. At the time, I wondered why that was the case, but assumed it might have something to do with it being in conjunction with Spanish television. However it turns out it might actually have something to do with Mario Batali splitting up with Food Network. That's right, after an eleven year run on FN, Batali is hanging up his FN chef's coat. Sources say the network told Mario that his multiple shows would not be renewed."

Sadly, the replacement will probably be from a show called "The Next Iron Chef", featuring actual chefs.

Is anyone else having a hard time with flickr images? None of them will load for me, not via imbedding in LJ or at the Flickr site itself ... haven't changed CSS lately or anything else. Ideas?

I'm not sure how I could have missed Gene Simmon's family reality show on A&E, but wow. You need to watch this, at least once. It's sublime and oddly better than the Osbournes.

Scene -- The family arrives for the Kentucky Derby. They check in at the hotel.

HOTEL GUY: I see one King Bed suite for Tweed
(Tweed being his SLF Shannon and her sister)

GENE: Yes, and I'd like to check in too. Gene Simmons. S-I-M-M-O-N-S.

HOTEL GUY: I'm sorry, I don't see a reservation.

GENE to SLF: You didn't get me a room?

SLF: No, just the one for us. You didn't call?

GENE: NO. Bleep! [Turns back to Hotel Guy] Can you look under One Thousand? [wink!]

Interwebs: is there a site where I can create and annotate a large map (region scale)?

I'm looking for something like a gooey GIS, where I can click on a city or a site and add a note, maybe a link to a journal article from that region or a cool hostel. Does such a site exist? Does Google let me make my own map and edit it, with multiple waypoints?
